Just Like Me
/This year, I have made the acquaintance of a young man who works at a long-term parking lot. I bring my car there regularly, and we have had opportunities to share stories about life, work, and family. Recently as we were laughing about some tendency we’re both prone to have, he exclaimed, “You are just like me!” I smiled at him and agreed. Later, I reflected on the sincerity and innocence of his comment. He could find similarity between me—a sixty-year-old white woman and himself—a 20ish African-American male. He could have said, “You are just like my mom,” but instead remarked, “You are just like me!” I loved this sweet moment of connection.
He understood that to be “just like” him, could go beyond race, gender, or age. Rather, identifying with one another is about sharing attributes. I was flattered that he thought I was just like him.
God wants us to be just like Him.
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18
He is looking for how we are becoming like Him. Are we showing kindness like He does? Are we loving others like He does? Are we being faithful like He is? Through Christ we are being transformed into God’s image. Certainly we don’t do it perfectly, but one day when we see Him face to face perhaps He will say, “You are just like Me!”
